Help me choose the right weight-loss surgery procedure
Listed below are the choices if you are considering one among the Gastric Bypass, the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, the Adjustable Gastric Banding, or the Gastric Plication.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE THE BEST OPTION FOR YOU, ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
- Do you want to eliminate the feeling of hunger, to which you are constantly prone? If the answer is YES, then the best possible option is RY Gastric Bypass, and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, followed by gastric plication. Patients with bands are not usually satiated.
- Do you want to shed the extra weight you carry to the maximum extent possible? If YES, then go for RY Gastric Bypass without considering anything else.
- How much care and “maintenance” are you willing to afford into your operation once it is done? If the answer is MINIMAL or NOT MUCH, never choose the Banding. RY Gastric Bypass is the best procedure, followed by Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Plication.
- How fast do you want to lose the extra weight? If the answer is SOON ENOUGH or IMMEDIATELY, or maybe you are scheduled for a knee surgery, or plan to lose the extra weight in say, 8 months, RY Gastric Bypass will give you the fastest results, followed by Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.
- If your procedure fails to help you lose extra weight, what would the “backup” plan be? Bands which fail due to erosion, slip and inadequate results of weight loss are converted into Sleeve or Plication. Sleeves that fail to show any results are converted to Bypass or Duodenal Switch. Bypasses which fail in extremely rare cases can have a band placed over them or it is possible to shorten the common channel.
- What are the short-term complications in each case after the procedure (within 30 days)? Bypass, Sleeve and Plication have a higher short-term complication rate compared to Banding.
- What are the long-term complications in each case after the procedure (in short, for the rest of your life)? Bands have the highest long-term complication rate.
- What are the results in weight loss in both short-term (5 years) and long-term (beyond 10 years) post-surgery? Patients who have undergone bypass have shown 15-20% better excess weight loss results compared to the other three procedures.
